A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 has struck off the coast of Japan, triggering a massive tsunami that is expected to reach the Pacific coast of North and South America within the next several hours. The earthquake, which occurred at 2:46 AM local time (1:46 PM EST), is the largest to hit Japan in recorded history and is expected to cause widespread damage. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the west coast of the United States. The National Weather Service has also issued a tsunami advisory for the entire coastline of Mexico.

The earthquake was centered about 80 miles (130 kilometers) off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, at a depth of about 15 miles (24 kilometers). The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning for a tsunami with waves up to 33 feet (10 meters) high. The tsunami is expected to reach the Japanese coast within the next hour and is likely to cause extensive damage to coastal areas.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Tokyo, where buildings shook violently for several minutes. There are reports of injuries and damage throughout the region, but the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Rescue workers are currently searching for survivors and assessing the damage.
